The Greene County sheriffâs office now has a new K-9 officer on duty as well as a new K-9 vehicle. Sheriff Marcus Simms said the K-9 officer, an 18-month-year-old Belgian Malinois named Maugli, specializes in explosive detection. Funding for Maugli came from through the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA). Cpl. Nicholas Gustovich of the sheriffâs office will become the K-9 handler. He underwent training in Pittsburgh for five days a week for 12 weeks at the Pittsburgh Police K-9 Academy. Gustovich and Maugli received their certification in patrol and explosives-gun detection. âCpl. Gustovich has a dedication and passion to the K-9 program and showed that through devoting the past three months to training in Pittsburgh,â Simms said. ....
Rutgers University recently announced that, with a few exceptions, it will require students attending classes for the 2021-22 school year to have a COVID-19 vaccination. The university cited the availability of multiple vaccines, the proven safety and effectiveness of those vaccines, and the âshared responsibilityâ of each member of the university community for the health and safety of the community in its decision. Since the Rutgers announcement, a growing number of schools have followed suit, saying that vaccinations will be mandatory for students before returning to campus in the fall. Local colleges and universities, too, are considering whether or not to enforce a vaccination mandate. ....
Waynesburg University nursing students and the Department of Nursing staff are volunteering to help Washington Health System administer COVID-19 vaccines. WHS is turning to the student nurses and faculty to help staff its vaccination sites in an effort to bolster the demand for qualified health professionals needed as the health systemâs nurses continue to care for COVID-19 patients. âWe are beyond grateful for the service and health care that WHS frontline staff has been providing throughout the coronavirus pandemic. It has been a long road for them, and we are glad our nursing students and faculty can help alleviate the additional workload of manning vaccination sites,â said Stacey Brodak, vice president for Institutional Advancement and University Relations at Waynesburg University. ....
