Night after night, rioters in loyalist areas have hurled bricks and gasoline bombs at police, who responded with water cannons. So far, almost 90 officers have been injured. Dissident republican groups such as the New IRA have also moved to renew a bombing campaign aimed at intimidating the police force. Jonathan Powell warns politicians not to play with matches and Foster should back off in calls for PSNI leadership change

Mrs Foster again reiterated her call for the PSNI chief constable Simon Bryne to resign, as she says the leadership of the police “needs to change”. The DUP leader was speaking in the wake of days of violence across Belfast, Carrickfergus and Londonderry which saw loyalists clash with police on the streets.
