Staples High School provides a variety of traditions and special days for seniors that are celebrated each school year, but Motorcade stands out above the rest. Motorcade, characterized by the drive from Compo Beach to the school stands for a football game, is known to be a favorite for the seniors. Motorcade is usually held in the fall to watch the homecoming football game. Due to COVID-19, Motorcade was postponed to the spring, but seniors were still able to have an enjoyable time. “ Motorcade was a great way to finish off my senior year as it was a way to bring everyone together to celebrate and participate in a Staples tradition” ....
Gilbertie’s Herb and Garden Center is filled with people looking through the wide array of greenery to plant for the summer season. Those who visit Gilberties, the majority being Westport residents, usually hope to expand their vegetable or flower gardens. Gilbertie’s has been an integral part of the Westport community for a significant amount of time, as it is nearing its 100 year anniversary in 2022. Gilbertie’s consistently improves the Westport community through community gardens and partnerships with the Aspetuck Land Trust. Gilbertie’s Herb and Garden Center offers a wide variety of different plants, both edible and ornamental. It stocks a wide variety of seeds, lawn ornaments and other organic products. ....
Former Westport First Selectman John Kemish Passes at 93 Written by Kerry Anne Ducey It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of former Westport First Selectman John Kemish on April 25 at the age of 93. John served three 2-year terms as Westport s First Selectman from 1967 to 1973. Prior to his election as First Selectman, John served as the town’s first professional Controller (now the Finance Director), where he improved the town’s credit rating from A to Aaa. As Controller, he played a pivotal role in the purchase of Longshore Country Club for the town under then First Selectman Herb Baldwin. ....
