Francisco Guterres Lú Olo renewed a 30-day State of Emergency last week to contain the spread of COVID-19, as the country rocovers from flash floods that affected more than 30,000 households in the island nation in April. Over 40 people died in the disaster that has left thousands mostly women and children currently still displaced in evacuation centers accross the country.

Although the number of new infections in the Southeastern Asia nation are relatively low, compared to neighbouring countries there is a growing concern of rapid increase of local COVID-19 transmisions. As quoted in the local media recently, Dr Rui Maria de Araújo, Coordinator of Integrated Center of COVID-19 in Timor-Leste, said six new infections of COVID-19 reported in the country on February 25 were traced to local transmissions after performing swab tests to communities living near the border.
