White angst keeps Trumpism alive in Macomb County

Democrats were in trouble. It was November 1984, and white, working-class voters in Macomb County had overwhelmingly voted for President Ronald Reagan for a second term. The Dems were losing their suburban, blue-collar base, and nowhere was the loss more pronounced than in Macomb County, home of the white, unionized autoworker. Just 20 years earlier, three-quarters of Macomb County voters turned out for President Lyndon Johnson, making it the most heavily Democratic suburban county in the U.S. To figure out what happened, local Democratic Party leaders hired Yale professor and pollster Stanley Greenberg. In March 1985, Greenberg sat down with Macomb County s Democratic defectors in hotel rooms and restaurants. After more than a month of interviews, Greenberg came to an startling conclusion: White, working-class voters who long identified as Democrats were fed up, fearful, and increasingly xenophobic. A GoFundMe page, which the city of Sterling Heights’ social media linked to, is raising funds for family bills and Dwayne Harrison’s funeral. According to the fundraising page, Harrison died after a drunken driver crashed into his vehicle during the afternoon of Jan. 30. Harrison was 31. He is reportedly survived by his wife, Mariah, two young children, and his wife’s unborn baby, who is due this summer.

Portillo s renames Halo to celebrate new Sterling Heights location

Portillo s, the Chicago-based eatery that s famous for hot dogs and a milkshake that s blended with a whole slice of chocolate cake is renaming a Sterling Heights landmark for one day to celebrate the eatery s new location in the city.  The Sterling Heights monument  The Halo is quite literally the butt of many jokes, with residents referring to the monument as The Golden Butthole of Macomb County,  or a variation of that name, based on a satirical Facebook page, the Free Press reported.  However, the monument will have a new temporary name, inspired by Portillo s savory side dish of deep-fried onions, called the Golden Onion Ring.

Photo provided by the Macomb County Office of Public Works Sewer lining work to begin along interceptor Advertisement STERLING HEIGHTS Four years after a Macomb County sewer collapsed and created a large sinkhole in Fraser, new work is beginning in the Sterling Heights area to make sure that such an event doesn’t recur. In December, the Macomb County Public Works Office announced that a contractor is working on a $28 million sewer project related to the Macomb Interceptor sewer. The current work is located in Sterling Heights’ portion of the ITC Corridor, west of Schoenherr Road. According to the county, the MIDD Interceptor flushes away the waste of over 500,000 county residents from Sterling Heights, Chesterfield Township, Clinton Township, Fraser, Harrison Township, Lenox Township, Macomb Township, New Haven, Shelby Township, Utica and Washington Township.
