TFO adds Beethoven's Emperor Concerto pay-what-you-can concert | Diversions


ST. PETERSBURG — Michael Francis, music director of the Florida Orchestra, will lead a special pay-what-you-can Inside the Music concert on Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto to celebrate the “never give up” spirit of the Tampa Bay community and the finale of this extraordinary season. The concert will be Thursday, May 27, 7:30 p.m., at the the Duke Energy Center for the Arts — Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S., St. Petersburg. 
In one of his signature events, Francis will take a deep dive into a single work, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor,” featuring pianist Natasha Paremski. It’s a fitting work for the time of COVID: Despite deafness and hardship, Beethoven never gave up.  ....

The Florida Orchestra to perform U.S. premiere of unique 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' | Diversions


ST. PETERSBURG — The Florida Orchestra will perform the U.S. premiere of a wickedly fun version of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” with a storyline by famed author Roald Dahl, music by acclaimed composer Eleanor Alberga, and lead narration by actor Becca McCoy.
It will be performed live at TFO’s Family Concert, scheduled for Sunday, May 16, 2 p.m., at the Duke Energy Center for the Arts — Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S., St. Petersburg. The performance will be presented following CDC guidelines for safety. Separately, the concert also will feature powerful images of a new work by internationally renowned installation artist Ya La’ford, set to Mozart’s iconic Overture to The Marriage of Figaro. ....

Spring brings new exhibitions to the museum. Opening April 10,
“Antioch Reclaimed: Ancient Mosaics at the MFA” features five restored mosaics from the second to fifth centuries from the museum’s collection. The exhibition includes details about the 1930s excavation where they were first discovered, with a loan of major artworks from Princeton University Art Museum. It also includes two mosaics that were mysteriously buried in the museum’s lawn and excavated in 2018. It remains on display through Aug. 22. ....

Florida Orchestra performs 50th live concert amid pandemic


ST. PETERSBURG — One year after the coronavirus brought our world to a standstill, The Florida Orchestra has hit a milestone filled with hope: TFO has now performed more than 50 concerts for live audiences at the Mahaffey Theater since October, all following CDC guidelines for health and safety.
To pause and reflect as the Tampa Bay community continues to heal, the orchestra will perform “Serenity,” a concert instilled with precious moments of beauty and peace, set for Saturday and Sunday, March 13 and 14, with Michael Francis, music director, conducting.
“We have experienced 12 months unlike anything before,” Francis said. “As we move forward together with optimism, we wanted to curate an event that gives our community a chance to pause and reflect. This ‘Serenity’ concert is a haven: a serene musical space for peace, beauty and contemplation.” ....
