Portsmouth-based Climax Studios, one of the UK’s longest-running game development studios, has been acquired by Keyword Studios, one of the industry’s key service providers. Keywords acquisitions have become a regular feature of our news coverage for many year, initially the company centred on acquiring service provider such art houses, QA, audio and even PR firms. However, it has also now taken on a significant number of end-to-end game development providers, with Climax Studios joining the likes of d3t, Studio Gobo, Electric Square and Wizcorp, among others. Even then Climax Studios, which has been running for 33 years, is a major investment with 109 staff led by CEO Simon Gardner. The studio has worked on titles such as Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Crackdown 3 and Returnal, out next week on PS5. ....
SpecialEffect will reveal the winners of the Corporate Social Responsibility award at this year s Best Places To Work Awards. Covering the US, UK and Canada shows, SpecialEffect will hand out the award that highlights games companies who have gone to great lengths to support charities and other social initiatives. SpecialEffect is a best known for using video games to enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities. It s worked on projects including the Xbox Adapative Controller and eye tracking technology, amongst many others. The Best Places To Work Awards has been running in the UK for four years, and is coming to the US for the first time this July. The deadline for entries is this month, so any US companies wanting to take part, you can request the entry forms here. UK games industry charity GamesAid has raised £70,000 ($84,985) and split the donation among seven different organizations. The donation was presented to the following charities; Access Sport Trust, Autistica, The Clock Tower Sanctuary, Lifelites, Everyone Can, Solving Kids Cancer and MAPS. The aid group has also recently appointed two new trustees to its board: Studio Gobo & Electric Square s Terry Haynes and Ukie s George Osborn. Over the past year, I ve spoken with so many different charities who ve turned to games as a way to keep themselves going during an unimaginably tough year, said George Osborn. I ve joined GamesAid as a trustee to do what I can to continue to support this essential work and continue to demonstrate the decent, kindhearted nature of the UK games industry to the wider world. ....
