ALPENA Each year, the Alpena County Board of Commissioners allocates approximately $300,000 to the Alpena County Regional Airport.
This year, it only budgeted a touch over $167,000.
If things go according to plan, that money could remain in the county’s general fund and help reduce a projected $1.2 million budget shortfall the county is facing now.
That’s because, last year, the airport was awarded nearly $18 million from the federal government’s first coronavirus relief package, which officials hope will cover the cost of operations, projects, and the payment of bond debt taken on to help pay for the construction of a new terminal at the airport. ....

ALPENA To say last year was a bumpy ride for the Alpena County Regional Airport may be an understatement.

Later months showed glimmers of hope as more people began to travel, and Airport Manager Steve Smigelski says he is hopeful the new year will be more in-line with years prior to 2020.
The airport recorded 6,427 paying passengers or enplanements last year, which, in a normal year, would make the airport ineligible for a $1 million subsidy from the federal government. The airport usually receives that funding if it eclipses 10,000 enplanements in a calendar year, which it does a majority of the time. ....

Snow covers the ground as lights cover the bridge on a wintry Wednesday night at the entrance to Island Park. The forecast calls for more snow, pointing to a white Christmas.
ALPENA Northeast Michigan will have a white Christmas this year, with the potential for a dusting of snow today and Christmas Day.
Faith Frederickson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gaylord, said it’s possible Alpena could see up to 1 inch of snow today or Friday. Snow depth in Alpena as of Tuesday was about 7 inches, according to the Weather Service. ....
