Letter from Chamber: Thanks, New Canaan, for Spreading the Holiday Spirit

While the Chamber was not able to host everyone in town for the annual Holiday Stroll, there was plenty of holiday magic in New Canaan this December.
So many of our community members worked together to make downtown feel special and we wanted to take this opportunity to give a special shout out to the people and organizations that helped the Chamber keep so many of New Canaan’s important traditions alive.
Over 170 families, organizations and businesses donated to the 2020 Holiday Lights campaign which lit up downtown New Canaan starting the week of Thanksgiving. Of course, a big shout out to Rob Hutchinson and his dedicated crew who carefully place and maintain the lights over the three months they are up. ....

Parks & Rec Supports Use of Pesticides on Athletic Fields

Saying it’s healthier for athletes, parks officials last week voted in favor of a recommendation to keep using pesticides on New Canaan athletic fields where it’s legal to do so.
Referring to a consultant’s report that compared the surface hardness of a grass field treated with pesticides (Conner Field off of Farm Road) versus one that’s pesticide-free (Saxe Middle School’s), members of the Parks & Recreation Commission voted 7-1 during their regular meeting Dec. 9 to recommend to the Board of Selectmen that New Canaan continue a midsummer application of chemicals on fields at Conner, Mead Park and Waveny. ....

Although COVID has changed everything this year, it did not deter the Exchange Club from sponsoring another Senior Center Christmas Party. To be sure, the party was different this year, but no less festive and fun.
To keep everyone safe, Lapham Center staff planned a drive-by party with outdoor decorations, live music piped outside, and Santa handing out deluxe goodie bags. Later in the day we had a Zoom Christmas Lights in New York City program with tour guides extraordinaire, Susan and Art Zuckerman, who showed the spectacular photos and told the stories behind them. About 80 older residents came to the drive-by celebration, nearly 100 saw the Zoom program, and 20 more got a goodie bag delivered to their house by Santa’s elves. ....
