When you think of a motorsport team that could conceivably be carbon neutral, you probably first jump to something like a Formula E or Extreme E squad. When I say NASCAR, you probably think of big roaring pushrod V8s, pumping carbon and particulates into the air, not green initiatives. Roush Fenway Racing announced in a press release Thursday it has officially qualified as the first carbon-neutral NASCAR team, meaning the organization offsets the full carbon impact of its cars, travel, and daily operations. It s a huge step for the sport that has shunned hybridization and electrification, opting to use old-school naturally aspirated V-8s in its next-gen car.

The claim, which the team says has been verified by the certification service ERM CVS, is proof that even an inherently carbon-intensive operation can neutralize its environmental impact. For Roush Fenway Racing, that means a goal of recycling 90 percent of every race car, including the aluminum, rubber, carbon fiber, and oil the team uses, per the ....
