Kids, get ready to launch a career in the space industry. Carnegie Science Center, in collaboration with North Side-based lunar logistics company Astrobotic, announced an initiative Wednesday that aims to connect students across the region with Pittsburgh’s growing resources in the space industry. CSC Director Jason Brown says the goal is to help students from early learners to those ready for the workforce in Allegheny County and 32 surrounding counties find educational and career readiness opportunities. “Most people think of space as just the astronauts or the engineers who build things, but it’s so much more than that,” Brown says. “That’s what we hope to illuminate is, ‘Listen, there are 1,000 different jobs you could have and you can still work in space.’” ....
Op-eds By Charles Garris May 24, 2021 1:13 AM Charles Garris is a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, a member of the Faculty Senate and a former Chair of the Faculty Senate executive committee. It is with great sadness that I learned of University President Thomas LeBlanc’s decision to retire from his position at the end of the 2021–22 academic year. At the beginning of his presidency, there was a palpable excitement that he would build on the upward trajectory of excellence left to him by the administrations of predecessors Stephen Joel Trachtenberg and Steven Knapp. LeBlanc was provided by the presidential search committee with a detailed analysis which defined a series of major historical challenges that had prevented GW from joining the top tier academic institutions of the nation and limited the future trajectory of the institution. ....

Tensions between LeBlanc and faculty members have been escalating since last February but have heightened this past year as various student groups, faculty and alumni launched petitions and statements criticizing his performance and calling for his resignation. Now, as the Board of Trustees works to conduct its standard review of LeBlanc – which they last conducted in spring 2019 – half a dozen faculty members said relations with the administration may have “passed the point of no return,” as they conti ....
In the booklet â2011 A Year to Celebrateâ written by Kathy Bond, she describes the beginning of the Ulysses Philomathic Library (UPL) from its shaky start in 1811. Abner Treman decided to start a lending library and the first organizational meeting was held in Snellâs Tavern. A Board of Trustees was established and Herman Camp became the first librarian. His store on the corner of Union and Main housed the library which contained 232 books, a large quantity for that time. However, the library closed in 1839 and all of the books were sold. In the early 1900s, two attempts were made to resurrect the library. First, the school library was opened to the public, but the building burned down and with it all of the books. Next, The Home Bureau decided to maintain a small library, but it too burned to the ground. In 1934, community members donated $1 each and formed the Library Association. The Masonic Building leased space for the new library and residents and Corn ....
