Longtime Stephenville fire chief reflects on career, retirement

Retiring Stephenville Fire Chief Jimmy Chew says he started working at age 11 when he had a newspaper route for the Empire-Tribune.
Now, after several other jobs, including an impressive 50 years with the fire department, Chew s response when asked what he was going to do in retirement was simple: I don t know, he said with a chuckle.
A retirement event for the longtime chief is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday at the City Hall at City Limits, 1907 E. Washington St. Dress is casual (no uniforms, please).

Stephenville teens use summer jobs to help prepare for future

Many Stephenville teens are taking this summer to use their talents and abilities to work in the job force.
Whether it s giving baseball lessons to younger children or helping people craft a fun memory, these teens are working hard to prepare for their future after high school.
Kylie Roberts, a recent graduate from Stephenville High School and Ranger College in cosmetology, plans on acquiring her cosmetology license in late August. Roberts hopes to work at The Salon in Stephenville this fall.
“I absolutely love my job and love making people feel pretty! I ve been leveling out work time and fun time, Roberts said. I’ve got to hang out with my friends before they leave for college and just be a regular teenager this summer. I am saving my money to, hopefully, have my own salon in the future, which is my biggest goal right now.”

Car show and swap meet set for this weekend
The Chicken House Flea Market and 4 Elite Auto Sales & Detailing are hosting a car show and swap meet through Sunday at the flea market, 8080 Highway 377 South.
The swap meet will be all three days. The car show will only be on Saturday and Sunday.
They are offering a free T-shirt and dash plaque with car show registration. The show will be decided by spectator voting.
In addition, there will be a 50/50 drawing benefitting Foster s Home for Children, along with door prizes and a poker run. Must be present to win prizes.
