There are many iconic objects lost throughout history. Will Ferguson imagines what it would take to find them

whisks readers to Japan, Australia and New Zealand as Interpol agent Gaddy Rhodes, photographer Tamsin Greene and travel writer Thomas Rafferty unexpectedly cross paths as they track The Finder  a mysterious figure who believes they can find history s real-life lost objects. Ferguson spoke with Shelagh Rogers about why he wrote  Lost and found I wanted the objects that are in the novel to be real objects. There are enough real objects that are lost out there. For example, Muhammad Ali s gold medal from the Olympics. He got the gold medal as Cassius Clay, came back very proud, was wearing his medal into St. Louis and he was refused service because it was segregated. He was so disgusted. He threw his medal into the Ohio River. It sank into the mud and it sits there to this day.

How can we get out of the Chakravyuha of passwords?

The San Francisco-based programmer Stefan Thomas made headlines recently because he forgot the password to unlock a small hard drive called the IronKey, which holds the keys to a digital wallet containing 7,002 Bitcoins worth $220 million. Two copies of this bitcoin password were saved on hard drives that failed due to software updates and this USB stick IronKey where the third copy was saved is password protected. Thomas lost the paper where he wrote down the password for his IronKey years ago. The device is so designed that after 10 incorrect attempts, it  seizes up and encrypts its contents forever. Only two attempts are now left to gain access, and Thomas can’t remember the password! Certainly, Thomas is not the only one who is in this situation due to password autarchy. A recent New York Times article, citing the cryptocurrency data firm Chainalysis, has said: “Of the existing 18.5 million Bitcoins, around 20% currently worth around $140 billion appear to be in lost or oth

Why a proposed deal between two American publishing giants matters to the Canadian books sector

The Globe and Mail Anna Porter Published February 12, 2021 Why should anybody care when publishing house Penguin Random House swallows competitor Simon & Schuster? Back last November when Penguin Random House (PRH) announced its successful bid to buy Simon & Schuster, there was a flurry of comment in the United States. The New York Times protested that the new, enlarged company would “profoundly reshape the industry, increasingly a winner-take-all business.” The Washington Post declared that the deal would be bad for readers: “As the number of publishers shrinks, authors find themselves with fewer potential buyers for their proposals and manuscripts. Bookstores are beholden to a smaller number of distributors. And readers face a shelf of titles further dominated by familiar bestsellers most likely to earn big payouts for massive corporations.”
