A matchmaking app that pairs people with puppies and a startup developing a drone delivery service are the first two ventures funded by the Portal Fund, a program designed to “ignite South Alabama’s startup ecosystem.”
The Portal Fund has announced investments of $50,000 in Deuce Drone and $25,000 in Barkd. The fund is a program of Mobile-based Innovation Portal, a business incubator created by the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and an array of partners. ....

Born in Liverpool, England, on June 1, 1949, John joined the Merchant Navy in 1966. Arriving in Fremantle in 1969, he jumped ship and began a new life in Australia.
The following year, he joined the New South Wales branch of the Federated Ship Painters and Dockers Union. His father, too, had been a Liverpool docker and John grew up in an atmosphere of working-class militancy and socialism.
He became the convener of shop stewards at the Garden Island Dockyards and was president of the NSW branch during the 11-week Garden Island strike when the union successfully defended its control of the roster system from the employers. ....

A new incubation center for startup businesses in south Alabama has opened in downtown Mobile.
A ribbon cutting was held Dec. 8 at Innovation Portal. The 30,000 square foot facility is located in the heart of Mobile’s technology corridor. Innovation Portal Board Chair Frank Lott says the opening is a monumental milestone for the team.
“So many fabulous people and organizations have supported this project along our journey to opening our physical space,” Lott said. “For the past several years we have been supporting entrepreneurs in our area without a place to call home. Now that we can fly the Innovation Portal flag on 358 St. Louis Stree ....

To-day has been an eventful one for this hitherto quiet little town; and a scene has been here enacted the like of which, those of us who witnessed it, desire to see again nevermore. I allude to the execution of thirty-eight of the condemned Indians, ordered by President LINCOLN to be executed for participation in the late massacres in this State.

Soon after noon on the 22d instant, Col. MILLER, of the Seventh Regiment Minnesota Volunteers, together with his Staff, some clergymen, and a few citizens of this place, visited the condemned in their cells, and informed them of their fate. Rev. Mr. RIGGS (well known to the Indians in his missionary capacity) interpreted Col. MILLER s remarks, and told the miserable men that their Great Father at Washington had ratified the action of the Military Court, and sentenced them to be hung on the following Friday, Dec. 26.
