(WLNE) – As children aged 12 to 15 became eligible for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine this week, Rhode Island is ramping up vaccinations for that age group. During Thursday’s weekly COVID briefing, Tom McCarthy, executive director of the state’s COVID response, shared that the state has administered first doses to 41% of 16 to 18-year-olds. “Prior to the authorization of the Pfizer vaccine to 12 to 15-year-olds, 59 clinics were scheduled in 45 schools to serve the 16 to 18-year-old population. Now that we have 12 to 15-year-olds approved for Pfizer, additional clinics are being planned for this pediatric population,” McCarthy said. ....
In his first jobs announcement since becoming Governor, Governor Dan McKee today announced that Fidelity Investments will create 500 new jobs at their Smithfield, Rhode Island campus over the next few quarters. The 500 new jobs will be part of a new Regional Center for Fidelity’s Personal Investing business. “I’m thrilled that Fidelity is choosing to expand here in Rhode Island where innovation thrives. This is encouraging and welcomed news as we begin Rhode Island’s economic recovery,” said Governor Dan McKee. “I’m grateful for Fidelity’s contributions to our state, including this commitment to 500 additional jobs over the next few quarters. New outdoor mask-wearing guidelines to takes effect RHODE ISLAND â As of today, fully vaccinated Rhode Islanders will no longer need to wear a mask outside. The Rhode Island Department of Health and Gov. Dan McKee announced the change to mask-wearing guidelines on Tuesday, placing the Ocean State more in line with recommendations from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). âI hope todayâs updated guidance from the CDC will encourage even more Rhode Islanders to get vaccinated,â the governor said on Tuesday. âVaccinated people have more flexibility when it comes to when and where they are recommended to wear masks.â ....
While Fidelity will look to recent graduates to fill the jobs, Metters said it will also consider candidates who may be in customer-service facing roles in other industries as well that may have been hit by the pandemic, calling it an opportunity to take on a new career. McKee praised the hiring news as a sign of things to come, noting that the Rhode Island is beginning its economic recovery following the devastation of the pandemic. Dan McKee said this week. McKee said he is working with state lawmakers to draft legislation that, if approved, would allow greater flexibility for Rhode Islanders to continue to collect unemployment benefits while returning to work part-time. Under the current rules, residents can make up to 100 percent of their weekly benefits before they lose their ability to collect, Commerce Secretary Stefan Pryor explained.
