Hotels in Brighton reopen as city ranks in top destinations for staycations


HOTEL businesses are celebrating as they can finally reopen today - and Brighton has been named one of the top summer destinations for tourists.
The Hilton Brighton Metropole in King s Road is among those welcoming back guests following months of closure, as Covid-19 restrictions are eased further.
The hotel chain said it is ready to embrace a pent-up demand for travel as overnight stays are now permitted for groups of six or two households.
Hilton said its seafront hotel in Brighton is among the chain s most popular destinations across the country, with online searches for leisure stays having risen in recent weeks. ....

Hotels and meetings and event venues in England will be able to
reopen from 17 May, after UK Prime minister Boris Johnson said that the data on
the state of the pandemic supported the further reopening of the economy. However the reopening may come too late for businesses in the hotels and events sector, an industry association has warned.
Johnson said in last night s statement to parliament, “With deaths and
hospitalisations at their lowest levels since last July, and the UK’s four Chief
Medical Officers agreeing a reduction in the alert level, the data now
supports moving to step 3 in England from next Monday 17 May”. ....

Residents of a recently built Naas housing estate have been left without a proper creche despite a shortage of childcare places in the town.
The houses at Castle Farm, Jigginstown, were provided by Dublin-based development company Ardstone, which is a significant player in residential construction in County Kildare.
Resident Barry MacNeill said residents feel let down because the creche has not been built.
The first families began moving in almost three years ago. ....

Tributes to Dereham Boxing Club stalwart Joe Perry


Mr Perry had been a dedicated member of Dereham Boxing Club for 46 years, touching hundreds of lives and coaching, guiding and inspiring generations of boxers.
His dad, Henry, taught him to box, following a family tradition that stretched back 100 years and over three generations. 
It is believed Mr Perry fought about 140 bouts in his amateur career, sometimes boxing twice or three times a week.
He joined Dereham Boxing Club in 1975 as a coach with his friend Kenny Harvey. At the time the club was in an old railway carriage behind the Railway Tavern. It later moved to Cherry Tree car park, then to Rash s Green and later to its current location in the car park of Breckland Business Centre. ....
