Rotheram victory in Liverpool provides bright spot for Labour

Labour’s Steve Rotheram has won a clear victory to retain his role as Liverpool City Region’s metro mayor.
The incumbent’s first round win in the contest, which was delayed by a year by the pandemic, provided some good news for Labour following a bleak set of results in its traditional heartlands yesterday.
Mr Rotheram won 58.3% of first preference votes, with the Conservative candidate Jade Marsden second on 19.6%.
His victory came after Labour needed to rely on second preference votes to retain the Liverpool city mayoralty. Joanne Anderson (Lab) won 38.5% in the first round, beating independent candidate Stephen Yip, who campaigned on an anti-corruption platform, in the second round. ....

As the region continues to count votes, some Greater Manchester boroughs have already declared, resulting in Oldham Council leader Sean Fielding losing his seat and the Liberal Democrats gaining in Stockport, where no single party has had overall control.

Oldham’s leader was usurped in Failsworth West by Failsworth Independent Party candidate Mark Wilkinson by a margin of fewer than 200 votes and, while Labour still holds a majority in Oldham, the party will now have to choose a new leader from its ranks.
Said Fielding: “While tonight is obviously disappointing, the electorate of Failsworth West has spoken.” ....

UK’s first black female mayor is elected
Liverpool has elected a new mayor to its city council after a tumultuous year in which its former mayor was arrested on bribery allegations.
Joanne Anderson (Lab) has become the first black woman to lead any UK city after being elected at a nailbiting vote count in which no candidate secured a majority share in the first round.
The former trade unionist was elected after voting went to a tense second round, with no candidate securing the more than 50% vote share needed in the first round.
This meant a second count was required, where second choice votes were taken into account. ....
