Annissa Essaibi George, a citywide councillor and former Boston schoolteacher with deep roots in Dorchester, will announce her candidacy for mayor of Boston today. The 47-year-old mother of four and small business owner will join what is now a three-woman race including two of her colleagues from the council to succeed Mayor Martin Walsh, who is expected to resign in the coming days.
She will launch her campaign outside of East Boston High School, where she worked for 13 years as a BPS educator before running for public office. ....

City Councilor Annissa Essaibi-George enters Boston's mayor race

City Councilors Michelle Wu and Andrea Campbell both announced their campaigns last fall. Essaibi-George is the first candidate to enter the race since Walsh’s nomination by the Biden administration earlier this month.
All three will seek to make history in a city that has only elected white men as its mayor. However, their candidacies alone are now historical: Never before has Boston had three women all running for mayor at a single time.
A Dorchester native, Essaibi-George, 47, is the daughter of immigrants. Her mother was born to Polish parents in a displaced persons camp in Germany. Her father immigrated to the United States from Tunisia in 1972. ....

With voting timetable unsure, candidate field is in topsy-turvy mode

Walsh resignation date is key
The field of potential candidates to succeed Mayor Walsh, Secretary of Labor-designate in the Biden Cabinet, dwindled down over the last week as city councillors and others eyeing the seat waited warily to see what sort of election schedule they will be confronting during this municipal election year.
The popular incumbent from Dorchester will likely resign sometime next month upon his Senate confirmation, in the process passing his duties off to City Council president, Kim Janey, who will serve as acting mayor until an election is held.
The timing of when voters will get their first opportunity to pick a successor will likely impact who will run, and who won’t. Per the city’s charter, if Walsh resigns before March 5, his departure would trigger a special election a preliminary followed by a runoff between the two highest vote getters that would be scheduled for early summer. ....
