In this week s edition of Rewind Robert Smith recalls a very important date in the history of Canadian harness racing. It was 60 years ago that nighttime racing finally came to the Province of Ontario. On the evening of May 17, 1961 with a post time of 8:00 p.m., it all happened at Western Fair Raceway in London, Ontario. A few recollections of the times and some old photographs help to recall this very special moment in our sport s history.

For many years, in fact for several decades, everyone involved with harness racing in Ontario longed for racing under the lights to make its way to the Province. It seemed like every other area where the sport was conducted it had already arrived. The careers of those with a lone home run cover the team s entire history in the National League, from Ross Barnes, Cal McVey and Deacon White, in 1876; through Billy Hamilton, Josh Phegley, Steve Souza Jr. and Ildemaro Vargas in 2020; and Joc Pederson this season.
The latter 5 are just the latest of
45 who have homered just once for the Cubs starting in 2000.
All those numbers just go to show that, when a player hits his first homer for a team, there is no telling how many more he may hit if any. ....

Sunday Notes: A.J. Hinch Knows the Value of an Out (and Doesn't Fear Twitter)

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch addressed the importance of being aggressive on the base paths during his Saturday morning media session. What he shared included the following, which I quoted on Twitter:
“Your WAR gets dinged whenever you get thrown out on the bases. It’s not valued. People are very aware… players are very aware of that. Winning baseball is good for your WAR too, even if it’s not quantifiable.”
Almost immediately, people began responding critically, opining that Hinch was (pun intended) off base. Feeling that more context was in order I’d prefaced the original Tweet by noting the subject at hand I added that Hinch also said that if you’re safe every time, you’re probably not being aggressive enough. ....
