How can Labour reconnect with lost voters in Swindon?

After a very poor showing in the local elections in Swindon, the borough’s Labour politicians are thinking hard about where the party goes from here.
Labour saw any hope of challenging the Conservatives – who have been in charge of the borough council for nearly 20 years – disappear on Friday. The ruling Tory group increased its majority in the chamber from three seats to 15, taking some long-standing Labour wards in the process.
But amid the shock and gloom of losing in wards such as Penhill & Upper Stratton, Rodbourne Cheney and Central, and losing veteran councillor Steve Allsopp in Liden, Eldene and Park South, there were a couple of bright spots. ....

Long-serving Swindon politicians leave council after local elections

Stan Pajak
Some familiar faces on the Swindon local political scene have left the stage – some by choice, others by the choice of the voters.
Long-serving councillors such as Bob Wright, Fay Howard and Vera Tomlinson all ended their service with an extra year. They have finally retired from their ward duties along with Maureen Penny, who was cabinet member for highways and waste services until the local elections.
Liberal Democrats leader Stan Pajak, whose time as a councillor in Swindon dates back to the 1990s, lost his seat in Eastcott to Labour by just 44 votes. His departure also means there is no Lib Dem representation in Swindon for the first time in decades. ....

Conservatives strengthen grip on power in Swindon with thumping local elections win

LOCAL ELECTIONS
Swindon Borough Council leader with new councillors Sudha Nukana (Rodbourne Cheney) and Daniel Smith (Penhill & Upper Stratton)
THE Conservatives strengthened their grip on power in Swindon as Labour’s red wall in the centre of town collapsed.
As votes were counted at Steam yesterday, the Tories always looked likely to hold on to their majority in Euclid Street.
But on a day to remember for the party up and down the country they sealed the deal with three stunning victories in Penhill & Upper Stratton, Rodbourne Cheney and Central. All three wards have been solid Labour seats until now – with even the loss of Penhill in 2019 attributable to a split Labour vote. ....
