PEABODY – Peabody’s Sunflower Theater was recently awarded a $9,200 grant from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission. The grant will partially cover the costs of muralist Stan Herd to create an art piece for the Sunflower Theater.
Over Memorial Day Weekend, the theater will have two opportunities for residents to tour the theater and see the improvements that have been made and the restoration work to be done.
The theater will be open to residents Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Monday from noon until 2 p.m. Marilyn Jones will be at the theater giving away sunflower seeds in honor of the theater and in recognition of 2021 as The Year of the Sunflower. Herd, the muralist working on the project, may also be available to chat with community members interested in the mural project.

The corn palace in Mitchell, S.D., is decorated with designs made of corn. Lawrence artist Adam Rohe was involved in the creation of the original version of the Corn Palace, which was built in 1892 and was replaced in the 20th century with the current building.
One of Lawrence’s most famous artists is Stan Herd. Originally born in Protection, he’s done crop and earthwork art around the world, and his ingenious use of nature has delighted viewers.
It has always seemed appropriate to me that he is following in the footsteps of Adam Rohe, an artist who worked during the 19th and early 20th centuries and was also from Lawrence.
Freedom Park in Atlanta is currently doubling as the canvas for one of the city’s newest portraits of the late civil rights icon and longtime congressman John Lewis.
