Japanese shares end higher as vaccine progress spurs recovery bets

TOKYO, May 28 (Reuters) - Japanese shares ended higher on Friday, as investors swooped on stocks related to the sell-off prompted by MSCI’s reshuffle in the previous session, while a steady vaccine rollout whetted risk appetite on hopes of a swift economic recovery.
The Nikkei share average rose 2.10% to 29,149.41, closing above the 29,000 level for the first time since May 10, while the broader Topix gained 1.91% to 1,947.44.
The Nikkei posted a weekly gain of 2.94%, while the Topix closed the week 2.24% higher.
“The rise is too much today and the gains are not reflecting the fundamental strength of the Japanese markets,” Shuji Hosoi, senior strategist at Daiwa Securities, said. ....

Japanese shares end lower as pandemic curbs hit risk appetite

TOKYO, May 19 (Reuters) - Japanese shares closed lower on Wednesday, tracking cues from Wall Street’s weak overnight finish, while domestic cyclicals lost ground as concerns over the country’s pandemic-induced economic slump weighed on investor sentiment.
The Nikkei share average dropped 1.28% to close at 28,044.45, while the broader Topix lost 0.66% to 1,895.24.
“Japanese market can’t be free from the influence of overseas markets. At the same time, Japan has its own negative factor - the government’s emergency measures to curb COVID-19 infections,” Yoshihiro Takeshige, general manager at investment management department, Asahi Life Asset Management, said. ....

Japanese shares end higher on Wall Street gains, stable U.S. rates

TOKYO, May 21 (Reuters) - Japanese shares ended higher on Friday, as a strong finish on the Wall Street overnight prompted investors to bet on cheap growth stocks, while stable U.S. interest rates also underpinned sentiment.
The Nikkei share average advanced 0.78% to close at 28,317.83, while the broader Topix rose 0.46% to 1.904.69.
Nikkei, which has been under pressure on concerns over slow economic recovery from the COVID-19 lows due to Japan’s stagnated vaccine rollouts, briefly fell by just over 10% earlier this month from a peak hit in February.
“Investors have started feeing comfortable with making bets as share prices have become relatively cheap,” said Jun Morita, general manager of the research department at Chibagin Asset Management. ....
