Bengaluru: Facing a controversy after a Google Search with the keywords “ugliest language in India” showed “Kannada” in the results, Google India said on Thursday that it is not the reflection of the company, as it apologised for misunderstanding and hurting any sentiments. The Search result sparked an outrage among netizens earlier in the day, with the Karnataka government threatening to issue a legal notice to the company. “Search isn’t always perfect. Sometimes, the way content is described on the Internet can yield surprising results to specific queries,” a Google India spokesperson told IANS in a statement. “We know this is not ideal, but we take swift corrective action when we are made aware of an issue and are continually working to improve our algorithms. Naturally, these are not reflective of the opinions of Google, and we apologise for the misunderstanding and hurting any sentiments,” the company spokesperson added. ....

San Francisco: Google is reportedly now bringing Lens to the desktop web inside Google Photos for convenient text copying through optical character recognition (OCR). Besides being its own app, Google Lens is also available in Image Search, Photos and integrated across Android. Opening an image with words reveals a Copy text from image suggestion chip that features the (old) Lens logo and dismiss button. It appears to the left of Share, Edit, Info and other controls for Google Photos, reports 9To5Google. Google parent Alphabet Inc on Tuesday reported record revenue for the second straight quarter despite the pandemic, driving shares up 6 per cent as it topped estimates for both advertising and Cloud sales as customers unleashed budgets for the holidays. Cutbacks by travel and entertainment advertisers in 2020 were nearly made up as the year went on by new spending from retail clients and others that were driven online by COVID-19 lockdowns. Google’s advertising business, including YouTube, accounted for 81 per cent of Alphabet’s $56.9 billion (Dh209 billion) in fourth-quarter sales, which rose 23 per cent compared with a year ago. Google’s Cloud unit also benefited from the pandemic. Google Cloud sales were $3.83 billion, or $13.1 billion for the full year, up 46 per cent from 2019. ....
