Call for volunteers to share a love of reading

Melton pupils will receive a helping hand developing their literacy skills thanks to a new Vinnies reading club starting up in the area next week.
Beginning July 28, the Melton Education Program will run as a free reading club from 3.45-5pm Wednesdays throughout the school year.
The Melton Education Program has a focus on the four pillars of literacy – reading, writing, speaking and listening.
It will have the capacity to support 30 pupils from different primary schools in the area and a range of different cultural backgrounds.
St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria education team leader Linette Etheredge said the program works with young people of primary school age to develop a love of reading and to build skills and confidence with literacy. ....

AGL Installing A Bunch Of Solar Systems For St. Vinnies
St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria will soon be making huge savings on its electricity bills through the installation of solar power systems.
AGL announced on Friday it will be installing 91 systems for the charity across the state – up to 1.6 MW of solar capacity in total capable of generating an estimated 1,992 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean electricity annually.
“We estimate that these installations will save up to $1.26 million in energy costs – much needed funds that can be redirected back into the community,” said AGL Chief Customer Officer, Christine Corbett. ....

Queensland joins Victoria in opposing rooftop solar tax, prefers battery support

6 May 2021
The pushback against the rooftop solar export charge proposed by the Australian Energy Market Commission has become political, with Queensland’s state Labor government joining Victoria’s in indicating it won’t back a move to tax solar households for electricity sent to the grid.
Queensland state energy minister Mick de Brenni told the Brisbane Times that his department’s incoming submission to the AEMC was expected to indicate that measures such as investment in more battery storage were “preferable” to a solar tax.
“There is no doubt that intermittent renewables like solar are putting pressure on the network and stability needs to be addressed across the National Electricity Market,” de Brenni was quoted as saying. ....

Rooftop solar tax could bite twice as hard as was modelled, says report

28 April 2021
A new report has claimed that the cost to solar households of a proposed charge for exports to the grid could be more than double that projected by the Australian Energy Market Commission, potentially leaving many solar homes with little or no income for their surplus generation.
The report, published this week by Victoria University’s Professor Bruce Mountain, critiques the AEMC’s calculation of the impact of the network charge for solar exports, as proposed in a draft determination last month.
As RenewEconomy reported at the time, modelling produced in a 250-page document proposed a tariff of around 2c/kWh for exports in the middle of the day, which the AEMC estimated would cost the average solar household up to $100 a year. ....
