Ballot measure on electrical upgrades would be repaid with rate hikes One of two potential questions on Petersburg’s October 5 th ballot seeks voter approval to bond for an overhaul and boost to both hydro and diesel electric generation on the island. The local electric utility says the work is necessary to keep those power sources running but it will mean an increase in the cost of power for utility customers. The bulk of the 7.8 million dollar bond issue would go to replacement of much of the equipment used to make power from the waters of Crystal Lake. The plant at Blind Slough dates back a century, is about 18 miles south of Petersburg, makes about a quarter of the community’s electricity and is Petersburg’s cheapest source of power. ....

Proceeds will go to scholarships for current medical center employees and high school students applying to college. Katie Anastas talked to paddlers as they finished the course at Sandy Beach. This year’s Paddle Battle had two starting points: Scow Bay and South Harbor. Maelle Boiter and her grandfather, Rick Williams, chose Scow Bay. Still, Boiter stepped out of the kayak with a smile on her face. ....

Bad insulator caused two power outages in Petersburg Saturday Posted by Angela Denning, KFSK | May 3, 2021 Photo by Joe Viechnicki/KFSK Some Petersburg residents went without power during two, long outages on Saturday. Both black outs were caused by an insulator problem in the Scow Bay area and affected the core area of Petersburg including downtown. The first outage started at about 10:30 a.m. and lasted an hour and a half. The second one happened just after 2 p.m. and lasted nearly two and a half hours. In a press release, Petersburg Municipal Power and Light Utility Director Karl Hagerman said the crew first found that the Blind Slough hydroelectric plant had tripped off but the circuit that serves Mitkof Highway was still working. They patrolled the line to look for damages but didn’t find any. They put the Scow Bay generator online and power was fully restored at noon. ....
Petersburg Pilot - RON LOESCH / Petersburg Pilot Rock-N-Road Construction, Inc. excavates along Mitkof Highway near the site of the Scow Bay pump station one replacement project on April 23. The project cost $744,695 and was funded by a loan from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, which was approved by voters in 2019. Utility Director Karl Hagerman said the pump station is being replaced to increase its wastewater pump capacity and keep up with the demand in the Scow Bay area..
