SCHOOL risk levels on Board agenda

The Ketchikan School Board is set to meet on Wednesday evening to hear the latest information from the acting superintendent about the Ketchikan School District s COVID-19 risk level assignments.
A COVID-19 outbreak in the community two weeks ago led to a surge in cases last week, many connected to students and staff at Ketchikan High School.
The district closed Kayhi to in-person instruction last week, but at the board s direction did not close other secondary schools in the district.
At the conclusion of an emergency board meeting last Wednesday, the board directed Acting Superintendent Katie Parrott to set Smart Start coronavirus risk levels for individual schools, rather than using one metric for the entire district. ....

8th graders design custom cargo planes

Eighth-graders in Frankie Urquhart s science class at Schoenbar Middle School recently faced a new challenge â assembling a miniature motorized cargo plane sturdy enough to carry a number of pennies in the classroom.
The project helps students practice using the scientific method to define and solve problems, Urquhart explained in a recent interview with the Daily News.
The challenge was to build a plane that could carry the highest number of pennies, she said.
Urquhart continued, And so the kids had to use their knowledge of electricity to wire their own cargo planes and talk about aerodynamics. . They used the scientific method to make modifications and try to build the planes that would carry the highest number of pennies. ....

A second spate of racist graffiti in less than a week has appeared in the Ketchikan area. An 11-foot wide swastika and other hateful symbols were painted Wednesday along a main road just south of town.

A green and white swastika drawn across the southbound lane of South Tongass Highway appeared Wednesday morning. The spray-painted anti-Semitic and white supremacist symbol drew widespread condemnation from community members. ....

Ketchikan police are investigating racist and homophobic graffiti that appeared around an asphalt trail and a local skatepark over the weekend. Police say no suspects have been identified.

Barbara Burns was walking on Sunday morning with a friend on the trail near Schoenbar Middle School when she first noticed a drawing of male genitalia spray-painted on the asphalt.
“We laughed. We thought it was funny, you know, kids having fun,” she said. “And then the swastikas started coming up, and then the hate speech, and it just disgusted us.” ....
