Puppeteer Gabriel Quirk, back on the renaissance festival circuit after a year of plague, talks about his life in the performing arts

For Gabriel Quirk performance art has always been a way of life, from working at a renaissance festival in upstate New York as a teenager, to his days on the streets of San Francisco with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to now, when he is back on the renfaire circuit as Sir Real the Puppet Man. Through the end of May, Quirk will be strolling the lanes of Scarborough Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie, delighting visitors with his imaginative and intricately-detailed puppets from the “humanette” Baby to his Venetian gondola. This week, he took time to answer a few questions about his life and his art for Dallas Voice.

One thing I see posted so often on Facebook is to take photos with your friends. Tell your friends and family how much you love them when you are with them. It especially takes hold today as I search my cameras for photos of Dave and found that all the photos I took, Vicki took, and others might have taken of him and us over the years have vanished with the many old phones which have vanished. I took this photo from an old Facebook posting on his page. It might have well been from that event that he hosted as Santa for GM, but I can’t honestly say. But, suffice to say and remember, Dave loved being Santa at events and being invited to be Santa was a highlight for him. Thank you Dave for all the good times! We will always miss you!

This past Saturday, Gary and Kelly Brignon took to the Scarborough Renaissance Festival to protest and bring awareness to the sexual assaults that have reportedly taken place in prior years.
In 2018, their then-14-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted while working at the festival, they said.
This was the second weekend the couple protested the festival with picket signs acknowledging the assaults. We are protesting the sexual assaults that have taken place out at Scarborough Faire, one of which was our daughter in 2018. Even though her assailant was prosecuted and convicted, he took a plea deal and he is a registered sex offender for life. We feel like Scarborough Faire does not take the appropriate measures to protect your women, Kelly shared. You can be as young as 14 to work out here, and to the best of our knowledge, they do not perform background checks and they allow older workers to work around younger children.
