'Transformational' islands growth deal signed

SIX major economic projects in Shetland are set to receive government funding worth more than £33 million over the next ten years as part of the islands growth deal was formally signed on Wednesday morning, ahead of a meeting of the full council.
Among the key projects in line for government investment are:

the Dales Voe ultra deep water port;
the mussel farming research project Shell-volution;
the Shetland Space innovation campus;
the Shetland Campus redevelopment;
the Knab redevelopment.
Last summer, the UK and Scottish Governments pledged to invest £50 million each in support of projects in all three Scottish island authorities, Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles, in an concerted attempt to stimulate economic growth and stem depopulation. ....

While today’s figures show signs of resilience for the economy over the winter months, we know the current lockdown continues to affect many individuals and businesses.
The UK Government’s package of measures continues to support Scottish jobs and businesses – and at the budget we extended our furlough and self-employed schemes, the Universal Credit uplift and VAT cuts for the hardest hit sectors. On top of the £9.7bn already provided to the Scottish Government, we announced a further £2.5bn for the next financial year.
There are reasons to be hopeful as we move into the Spring – we are starting to see the impact of the UK Government funded vaccination programme and we are directly supporting Scotland’s economic recovery through our Plan for Jobs, investing in communities and accelerating the energy sector’s green transition. ....

Today [17 March 2021], UK Government Minister for Scotland Iain Stewart joined the Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity, Michael Matheson, and leaders of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Orkney Islands Council, and Shetland Islands Council to sign the Heads of Terms for the Islands Growth Deal.
The agreement outlines plans for the UK and Scottish governments to each invest £50 million in the future economic prosperity of Orkney, Shetland and the Outer Hebrides. This is anticipated to unlock a further £235 million of investment from project partners, delivering a combined £335 million boost for the islands. ....

Election planning an 'additional pressure' on council workload


PLANNING for the Scottish Parliament election in May is a “huge piece of work” which is adding to council staff’s workload, a meeting heard on Monday.
Corporate services director Christine Ferguson said, however, that “all the work is in hand”.
The Scottish Parliament election is taking place on 6 May but due to the coronavirus pandemic it will feel somewhat different than usual.

Physical distancing and hygiene measures will be in place at polling stations, while the count will not take place overnight as usual.
Lerwick member Stephen Leask asked a meeting of the council’s policy and resources committee whether the use of SIC premises for the election was causing any “sleepless nights”. ....
