Corn Growers President Says South Dakota Legislative Session A Positive One

The South Dakota Legislature completed the main run of its 2021 session last week and it was a positive one for the state’s corn growers. South Dakota Corn Grower’s Association President Scott Stahl says they were pleased to see the funding given to the Ag Bio Processing facility at SDSU.
He says what’s also positive is the move to produce ethanol in South Dakota for aircraft.
Stahl says his group is also pleased the state lawmakers made no major changes to how property taxes are determined.
Stahl says corn growers took a neutral position on the merger of the State Agriculture Department with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources so they’re waiting to see how that all works out now that the merger has been upheld. ....

Linton Freedom Festival cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns

LINTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)- The Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce announced on May 13 that their annual Independence Day festival would be cancelled.
The parade has been around for more than 100 years and Cheryl Hamilton, Executive Director of the Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce, said it wasn t an easy decision to make.
It s not something that was done overnight and it s not something that was done in one meeting, she explained.
Hamilton said with the state s phased reopening depending upon the number of coronavirus cases around the state, they had to prepare for the worst.
There s just a lot of things that went into play. At any point in time if the governor decides he s not going to reopen the next phase, then we knew we were in a world of hurt. ....

Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow is getting ready to lead the Senate Ag Committee once again following the changeover of majority from Republican to Democrat. One of the first major tasks will be the start of writing the new farm bill. South Dakota Corn Grower’s Association President Scott Stahl says his group is ready to be engaged in those discussions. He says they want the new farm bill to provide market opportunities for growers rather than ad hoc government payments as was seen during the pandemic.
He says one of their primary goals is making sure Congress retains a solid crop insurance program in the new farm legislation. ....

South Dakota Agriculture Groups Divided On Ag DENR Merger Proposal

Agriculture groups in South Dakota have different takes on Governor Kristi Noem’s plan to merge the State Department of Agriculture with Environment and Natural Resources. The South Dakota Corn Grower’s Association has not yet taken a position according to President Scott Stahl.
Also not taking an official position yet is the South Dakota Soybean Association and the State Cattlemen’s Association. The State Farm Bureau however is in favor of the merger according to President Scott VanderWal.
South Dakota Farmers Union’s lobbyist Mitch Richter says his group is opposing the merger. ....
