Post-conviction hearing in Facebook murders complete, judges ruling yet to come


Defense attorneys hoping to get new trials for a mother and daughter’s first-degree murder cases laid out their reasons in a Washington County courtroom Wednesday during closing arguments in a post conviction relief hearing.
Barbara Potter, 69, and daughter Jenelle Potter, 38, are seeking new trials. Jenelle Potter’s post-conviction attorney, Grace Studer, also made a good argument for at least a new appeal for her client. Jenelle’s trial attorney, Cameron Hyder, admitted Tuesday to his part in missing certain deadlines in the appellate process.
Those missteps were essentially a waiver of appealing much of the evidence presented at trial. ....

Woman charged with professor's death to have mental evaluation, couple charged in child's death appointed attorneys


Attorneys appointed for two accused in death of child
Two unrelated high-profile murder cases were set for hearings Monday and two defendants in one case were appointed attorneys while the third in a different case will undergo a mental evaluation.
Annette D. Harvey, 51, of New Jersey, was charged in January with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Robin Leonard. The stabbing happened Jan. 29 at Leonard’s home and she died 11 days later.
Harvey appeared with her attorney, Jeff Johnson, before Criminal Court Judge Lisa Rice. Johnson asked the judge to approve a mental evaluation for his client, which she did. ....

Judge orders teen charged with murder to be held until next hearing


The attorney for a 17-year-old charged with murder in what authorities have indicated was a gun sale gone wrong this week wants to keep the media from covering a transfer hearing set in May.
Johnson City police investigators recovered 15 shell casings from the scene of a deadly shooting Wednesday, according to testimony in the teenager’s detention hearing on Thursday.
Investigator Shane Malone also testified that Darius W. Adler, 17, of Johnson City, told police he fired off 17 rounds at a man he’d arranged a meeting with to buy a gun.
Adler was charged with first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, possession of schedule III drug for resale and simple possession of schedule VI drug on Wednesday. ....
