STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The ongoing effort to vaccinate residents and staff of Staten Island nursing homes is continuing, with second doses beginning next week in some facilities, as coronavirus (COVID-19) infections on the Island reach striking highs and deaths continue to mount.

As Americans celebrate the rollout of a coronavirus vaccine, many of the doctors and nurses first in line for inoculation say a victory lap is premature. They fear that the optimism stirred by the vaccine will overshadow a crisis that has drawn scant public attention in recent months: the alarming shortage of personal protective equipment, or PPE, that has led front line medical workers to ration their use of the disposable gloves, gowns and N95 respirator masks that reduce the spread of infection. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The first doses of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine were delivered to Staten Island Monday, placed into syringes and administered to health care workers in a symbolic first step to overcoming an outbreak that has killed over 1,100 borough residents and shook the Island immeasurably in the past nine months.
Now, the process of delivering vaccines to the borough’s nursing homes, where more than 200 Staten Islanders are presumed or confirmed to have died of the disease since March, has begun. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. At least one Staten Island nursing home is eyeing the beginning of next week to begin coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccinations, but hurdles like acceptance of an immunization that has been developed and distributed in record time are increasingly becoming present among the Island’s long-term health care facilities.
Scott LaRue, the president and CEO of ArchCare, which runs Carmel Richmond Nursing Home in Dongan Hills among the largest long-term care facilities on the Island said the company expects to begin vaccinations within its nursing homes on Dec. 21 and will reach its Staten Island facility on Dec. 23. ....
