Life Is Better ground out a parked-out win in the Ken Houston Memorial Pace at Dresden Raceway Sunday afternoon (July 25) for Garrett Rooney in 1:58.1. Favourite Bigmachwithcheese put in some steps through the first turn and broke stride before the quarter pole, totally shifting the dynamics of the race. Dreaming Out Loud fired to the front for Tyler Borth, while Millenium Seelster slipped into the two-hole and left Life Is Better was caught out. Being parked out wasn t the best option but I also knew going to the back would have been a death sentence, so I just stayed out there, said Rooney. My horse raced big. The Saturday (July 24) card at Hiawatha Horse Park proved eventful in a couple ways. For one, driver Marc St. Louis, Jr. visited the winner s circle five times on the 12-race card thrice for trainer Tyler Nostadt. And for two, the trotting mare Lefkada broke a near-decade-long track record. St. Louis five bagger started with a pair of back-to-back wins, the first with Liminary Hanover ($5.30) and the second with Nostadt trainee Bettors Hope ($5.30). He then scored another batch of consecutive wins with Zarconia Seelster ($4.30) and another Nostadt trainee, Rye N Clyne ($4.30). Nostadt and St. Louis teamed for their final wins on the afternoon when Dinner At The Met ($5.70) launched off cover to a victory in the 10th race. ....
Ken Houston was never one to shy away from a brawl on the ice which is very fitting as Sunday s race named in his honour is expected to be a battle. Life Is Better has been called the 9-5 morning line favourite, but Bigmachwithcheese will have something to say about that at 2-1. Millenium Seelster is also throwing his hat into the ring as a contender. Life Is Better is coming off a wire-to-wire win in 1:57 last week at Dresden. The five-year-old Betterthancheddar gelding will have Garret Rooney at the controls. Dale Spence is in the bike for Bigmachwithcheese, also a five-year-old Betterthancheddar gelding. Bigmachwithcheese is undefeated at Dresden including winning the Mark Austin Pacing Series in 1:56.2. ....
