Sleeves up: Vaccines on the way to local nursing homes

Sleeves up: Vaccines on the way to local nursing homes 1/1/21 2:58 AM Local long-term care facilities are preparing to vaccinate residents and staff as the long-awaited vaccine roll-out marches on.  The first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines went to select long-term care facilities around the state through a government partnership with CVS Omnicare. At least one Johnson County long-term care facility Aspen Trace Family-first Senior Living received the vaccine Monday. Nearby, Bethany Village, a southside American Senior Communities facility, got a shipment.  Officials at other long-term care facilities such as Compass Park Indiana Masonic Home and Homeview Health and Rehabilitation Center, both of Franklin, are finalizing the details of their vaccination plans and getting consent forms signed while awaiting their shipment dates.

Top 10 stories of 2020

Top 10 stories of 2020 Staff Reports comes down One limb at a time, the locally famous leaning tree came down Sept. 3. For more than 150 years, the tree stood at a 30-degree angle about 3 miles south of Franklin in the 3500 block of Airport Road. The tree’s removal was initiated after a citizen submitted a formal complaint asking the highway department to look into the safety of it. On June 4, Airport Road, also known as Nineveh Road, was closed after an initial inspection determined the tree was unsafe to drive under. Then, in June, two master arborists determined the tree was at “extreme risk” of falling. So, the Johnson County Board of Commissioners voted 3-0 to remove the tree. County officials and local artisans are still looking at ways to preserve the tree, such as a memorial.

County adds building, zoning standards

County adds building, zoning standards 12/30/20 12:00 AM In an effort to prevent low-quality housing in unincorporated Johnson County, the Johnson County Plan Commission and Board of Commissioners recently approved the county’s first set of subdivision design standards. The standards address common complaints that remonstrators make about new subdivisions, such as lot sizes, fencing and construction materials, said Dan Cartwright, a plan commission member. “We have more growth in Johnson County than we’ve ever had,” Cartwright said. “There are so many subdivisions and almost all of them going in have had a significant amount of remonstrators.” Story continues below gallery

New Whiteland families unite for first-ever holiday light contest 12/24/20 9:45 AM What started as a question in a community Facebook group blossomed into a way to unite families and spread Christmas cheer in the midst of a global pandemic. Having moved to New Whiteland from Carroll County this year, Dee Appleton didn’t know how the town celebrated Christmas, so she asked the town Facebook group if there was a town tree. Appleton found out via the group there wasn’t a celebration yet. Neighbors had a strong interest in a house decorating contest and a public Christmas display. Story continues below gallery
