Collier leaders set to act on mental health expansion with David Lawrence Center

The Collier County Commission is preparing to vote on two key elements of a plan to build a $25-million center to address growing demand for mental health and addiction treatment in the region.
Commissioners will be asked at their May 25 meeting to sign off on five acres that will be donated to the county from the David Lawrence Center, the dominant provider of mental health services in the community, according to Scott Burgess, chief executive officer of the nonprofit organization.
The new complex will be built using local sales tax proceeds on the five-acre parcel that is immediately east of the David Lawrence campus off Golden Gate Parkway near Interstate 75. ....

St. Matthew's House CEO Vann Ellison retires after 17 years

Ellison joined St. Matthew’s House in 2004 as president and CEO when it operated one homeless shelter with a $1.5 million annual budget. Ellison previously was the jail chaplain for the Collier County Sheriff s Office.
Under his leadership, St. Matthew s House has grown to a $25-million annual operation with its year-long homeless and addiction recovery program and numerous businesses to support its services. It employs 250 people.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, St. Matthew’s House has distributed food to more than 3,000 families a week.
“It is difficult to visualize St. Matt’s without (Ellison), given all he has accomplished over his 17 years of service,” Trachtenberg said. “We are sure that (Ellison’s) talents will continue to be used for a greater purpose.” ....

A 'Deeper Shade of Blue' to play live and virtually in Lincolnton on Saturday | Arts & Entertainment

A bluegrass band with ties to Lincolnton will be returning to the Lincoln Cultural Center this Saturday. This concert, which has been held annually to honor Donald âPapaâ Goodson, is scheduled this year to be held both seated and virtually. Only 100 tickets will be sold so social distancing can be maintained. The concert will also be held virtually.
Lifelong Lincolnton resident Scott Burgess who has been member of Deeper Shade of Blue since 2015, was friends with Papa Goodson. When Goodson passed away on April 13, 2015, he sang at his funeral.Â
âDon supported local music, that was his big thing,â Burgess said. âItâs what we all should do. Even before this band, Iâd been in two other groups before this one and whenever weâd play in the area, heâd be there. We really miss him. We need to keep that going, especially now.
