Manatee County to consider Scott Hopes for permanent county administrator job

County commissioners voted to hire Hopes as acting county administrator on April 1 to serve in the role until a permanent replacement for former County Administrator Cheri Coryea is hired. Commissioner Kevin Van Ostenbridge, who made the initial motion to terminate Coryea, recommended Hopes for the initial search to fill the interim position.
Circumstances surrounding that termination were investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, but that investigation has since been closed.
All along, I felt that we would know within the first few months, or at least within six months, whether it was going to work, whether the right chemistry was there, and whether I could help the new board of county commissioners move forward together in a collaborative way, Hopes said. ....

PALMETTO, Fla. (WWSB) - It’s a meeting that was all about getting important Piney Point information to city leaders in Manatee County. The discussion at Tuesday’s Council of Governments meeting at the Bradenton Area Convention Center focusing on all the different stages of the Piney Point scare, where they were, where they are and what’s next.
“We’re looking at about ten to twelve months for Manatee County to have the deep well drilled,” said Dr. Scott Hopes, Manatee County Administrator. “And the pre-processing equipment to put on that well with a wellhead, in order to begin injecting the pre-processed water from Piney Point into that well.” ....

PALMETTO, Florida, April 4, 2021 (ENS) – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis traveled today to Manatee County to meet state and local officials as Florida struggles with uncontrolled toxic discharges from the former Piney Point phosphate processing plant. Several breaches in a wall around a 480-million gallon wastewater reservoir have been leaking for days after heavy rains.

The governor has issued a State of Emergency in Manatee County after crews using heavy equipment to shore up a breach in the wall with earth and rock failed Saturday due to the amount of pressure behind the leaking waste, Manatee County Acting County Administrator Dr. Scott Hopes told reporters. “They reached a point where they were about to celebrate, and then it blew through,” Hopes said. ....
