Credit Spokane Public Schools The Spokane school board voted Wednesday night to change the identities of several schools. Most notably, it renamed Sheridan Elementary after Spokane civil rights leader Frances Scott. Jerrall Haynes, chair of the Spokane Public School Board, said he fully supported the new name, and said it was personally significant to him. “And I never once thought I’d have the opportunity to name a school after a Black woman, right? Especially not here in Spokane.” Frances Scott Elementary was previously named for Philip Sheridan, a Civil War era American military leader. A free meals program provided by local school districts aims to keep children fed and healthy over the summer. As in previous years, both Temple and Belton independent school districts will offer their summer school meal program to children this year. The two programs will begin Monday at most locations and distribute both breakfasts and lunches. Donna Shelton, assistant director of nutrition services at BISD, said the summer meals are a part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture program that helps feed children. âMany children rely on school meals during the academic year, and weâre thrilled to be able to continue offering them throughout the summer months at no cost to the child,â Shelton said. âThese nutritious meals will help ensure the kids have a healthy summer and are ready to learn when school resumes in August.â ....
Nearly 30 years after the Temple Independent School District implemented the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Temple High in 1992, Lisa Adams â the districtâs assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction â said student engagement is still going strong. âAs the only district in Central Texas to offer a K-12 IB experience, we have seen firsthand how this investment makes a difference in the lives of our students,â Adams said during an April board meeting. âWe are immensely proud of the staff members at our IB campuses who go above and beyond to foster curiosity, diversity and a love for learning for our students.â ....
