SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA The California Highway Patrol reopened Highway 1 in both directions after temporarily closing the highway Wednesday afternoon to assist a person in crisis in Live Oak.
CHP Santa Cruz called for the closure of Highway 1 in both directions around 2:30 p.m. and announced around 5 p.m. that the person had been brought to safety.
The incident snarled traffic in the area and also caused delays along southbound Highway 17, according to CHP. Northbound traffic was diverted onto Soquel Drive and southbound traffic was diverted onto Morrissey Boulevard.

Share Updated: 5:42 PM PDT Jul 21, 2021 Highway 1 is reopened in both directions in Santa Cruz after a man in distresses forced law enforcement to close the road down, Wednesday afternoon. According to the California Highway Patrol, first responders are dealing with a person in distress on the overpass near Soquel Drive and Soquel Avenue. Around 4:50 p.m. the highway was reopened. During the incident, CHP directed northbound traffic off onto Soquel Dr. and southbound traffic onto Morrissey Blvd.Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions for at least an hour.
