Elfriede “Ellie” A. Parker, 80, passed away on April 21, 2021. She was born on June 8, 1940 to Joseph and Anna (Biel) Gessler in Bronx, NY. While living in New York City, she attended Hunter College and worked for IBM as a translator. She married Lawrence “Larry” Parker on February 8, 1964, and relocated to his hometown, Salem, OH, where they lived for 50+ years.
The hallmark of Ellie’s life is energy fueling her love of family and friends, travel and adventure, and fun and laughter. She truly never met a stranger in Salem and throughout the travel she enjoyed around the country and the world. She gave of herself to all who knew her as Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, and Friend. Fun-loving – her ever-present smile and infectious laugh have been called out by many who knew her. COLUMBIANA Wayside Lawn Structures on state Route 14 reported a theft of equipment that occured on Sunday. K-9 Csuti assisted the highway patrol with a vehicle sniff during a traffic stop at 6:53 p.m. Tuesday.
LEETONIA A Columbia Street resident reported at 3:11 p.m. Sunday her ex-boyfriend will not stop text messaging and harassing her. She was advised to block his number and to contact the courts if she wanted to pursue a protection order. A 200 block Chestnut Street resident reported at 1:43 p.m. Tuesday a package had been reported delivered to her front porch, but she never received it.

YOUNGSTOWN Barbara B. Amstutz, 85, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Park Vista Assisted Living.
Barb was born Nov. 14, 1935, in New York City (Staten Island), to the late William and Marion Behlen.
She grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Glen Ridge High School, where she was an All-State field hockey player. She attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, and was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She graduated with a B.A. degree in sociology and psychology. Barb then attended the Ohio State University and received a master’s degree in social work.
Barb began her career at Children’s Services in Cleveland, where she met her husband, retired attorney, C. John “Jack” Amstutz. They were married in Verona, N.J., on June 10, 1961. After marriage, she moved to Youngstown, where she worked for Children’s and Family Services, the Jewish Federation of Youngstown, the Youngstown Hearing and Speech Center and ended her career at the Hine Memorial Fund.

SALEM The Alpha Iota chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma teachers’ honorary held its April meeting at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Salem.
Maralyn Porter offered a reading and the invocation. Dinner was prepared and served by Sharon Walker, Brittany Walker and Marcia Spack.
President Pam Todd conducted the business meeting. The minutes and treasurer’s report were approved. Members were reminded to continue saving their “Coins for Change” and their clothing drive for a local charity.
