Ongoing legal disputes over the successor to the late Zulu king are unfolding against a backdrop of a R66-million upkeep package funded by the taxpayer and administered by the Zulu Royal House Trust.

KZN PREMIER Sihle Zikalala met newly-appointed Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini for the first time on Thursday, 13 May.
They held a private meeting at KwaKhangelamankengane Royal Palace in Nongoma, KZN, a day before the premier was due to deliver the royal house budget at the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg.
The premier said the purpose of the meeting was to clarify how the government worked with the royal house.
“It’s known that the royal house is under the premier’s office in terms of governance and administration,” he said.
A delegation is transporting the remains of the Zulu Regent to her final resting place.
Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu will be laid to rest in a private ceremony on Thursday.
The Queen of the Zulu Nation died just over a month after King Goodwill Zwelithini s death.
The mortal remains of her majesty, Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu, have departed from the Hillbrow Mortuary in Johannesburg and is embarking on a journey home.
The Queen of the Zulu Nation died on 29 April 2021, just over a month after King Goodwill Zwelithini s death.
Her death in a Johannesburg hospital at the age of 65 was announced by traditional prime minister to the Zulu monarchy and nation, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

The African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have described King Goodwill Zwelithini as a courageous leader who embraced African unity.

Condolences have been pouring in following the news of the death of the Zulu monarch on Friday.
Zwelinthini died in hospital at the age of 72.
The ANC said King Zwelithini was a courageous leader who not only cared about the well-being of his people, but the whole nation.
“He took centre stage in calling for an end to politically motivated killings which had resulted in the unwarranted loss of innocent lives, especially in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces.
