HEEDING the appeal of the business chambers in Cebu, the Visayan Electric Co. is set to renegotiate some of its power contracts in efforts to lower power rates in its franchise area.
Visayan Electric president and chief operating officer engineer Raul Lucero announced that the electric utility has considered renegotiating its contracts with some of its power suppliers and is in fact already preparing to hold a competitive selection process (CSP) for power supply agreements.
“We understand the difficulties that our customers are facing now that we are in a pandemic and the Visayan Electric management has decided that this is one way of helping our customers, both the public and business sectors,” Lucero said. ....

MCCI to Visayan Electric: Lower electricity rates

THE Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) is calling on Visayan Electric Company to renegotiate its contract with power generators to lower the cost of electricity in their franchise area.
The MCCI wants the Visayan Electric to renegotiate the prices of two of the highest power producers for the distribution utility power generators Cebu Private Power Corp. and Green Core Geothermal Inc.
“A year into the pandemic and everyone is still trying to rise above our different problems. It is very difficult to recover when the businesses are saddled with debts and financial obligations that are piling up. While there are people and businesses that are already in the recovery phase, there are still those who have yet to get back on their feet,” said MCCI president Steven Yu in a statement issued Tuesday, April 6, 2021, noting that both the public and private sectors are still dealing with the effects of the pandemic. ....

ERC readies report on Visayan Electric's alleged high power rates

THE technical staff of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is set to complete by February its evaluation on whether the biggest power provider in the Visayas had charged âhigh electricity ratesâ in the area as alleged by a business group, an official of the agency said on Tuesday.
Floresinda G. Baldo-Digal, ERC commissioner-in-charge, said the regulatorâs technical team is evaluating the letter sent by Visayan Electric Co., Inc. to explain its side.
âThe explanation is currently under evaluation by our technical staff, they are targeting to present their recommendation to the Commission by next month,â Ms. Digal told ....

Senator wants refund from Veco

IF PROVEN that Visayan Electric (Veco) was charging its consumers high cost of electricity, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) should demand a refund from the power company, said Senator Sherwin Gatchalian.
“Kung mapapatunayan na hindi makatwiran ang singil ng Veco, dapat ibalik nila ang binayad ng mga kunsyumer. Mandato ng ERC na protektahan ang interes ng publiko lalo na kung may pang-aabuso ngang nagawa (If it will be proven that Veco committed a violation, it should refund the consumers. It is in the mandate of the ERC to protect the public s interest especially if there is really abuse),” Gatchalian said ....
