Remembering Dr. Ping


The death last week of former Ohio University President Charles Ping, for many, closed the door on a golden time in their personal and professional lives.
“For those of us of a certain age, this man embodies what a university should be. R.I.P., President Ping,” read a tweet from the Ohio Bobcats Hockey Blueline Boosters.
In interviews and in online comments, those who knew Ping for decades those who met him in passing all described him as a wise and inspirational leader and as a kind and thoughtful man.
“I consider him to be the greatest president of a university that I have ever known,” said Richard Vedder, Distinguished Professor of Economics Emeritus. (And Vedder knows his share—he’s an internationally recognized expert on the economics of higher education who counts Purdue’s Mitch Daniels and Gordon Gee among his friends.) ....

oving to college is one of the biggest moments in someone’s life; It’s nerve wracking, stressful and exciting all at the same time. For me, going to a college out of state made these feelings even more intense.
Although Pittsburgh is only three and a half hours away, moving to Athens felt like moving to a different planet. I knew very few people before classes started, and I was genuinely scared that the COVID-19 pandemic would make my chances of meeting new people worse. Modified quarantines implemented in Sargent, Elder


Residents of two residential halls have undergone an in-dorm stay-at-home period following local outbreaks in each building.
On Feb. 22, Communication freshman Amy Reyes-Gomez received an email from residential services declaring a five-day “Stay at Home Order” effective immediately for the entire second floor of Sargent Residential Hall. On Feb 25, a similar email was sent to first floor residents of Elder Hall.
The emails said no student should leave their room outside of essential activities such as using the restroom, picking up dining hall meals, and getting tested for COVID-19. It also instructed students to get rapid antigen tests three-to-four times over the course of the stay-at-home period. ....

Northwestern Dining announces new rules to enforce social distancing


As Northwestern Dining ramps up its efforts to enforce social distancing and reduce crowds in dining halls across campus, some students say they are struggling to find open reservation slots to pick up meals.
In a Feb. 12 email, NU Dining announced it would reduce seating and opening hours at Foster-Walker Complex West, and would offer a new “to-go” meal experience. NU Dining aso said it would limit seating in Allison Dining Hall, Elder Dining Hall and Norris University Center. Dining room monitors have also been stationed to check dining reservations, face mask compliance and proper distancing between tables.
“We are taking precautions to keep you safe but sharing a meal with someone you do not live with increases the risk of contracting COVID-19,” the email said. “Your risk increases the longer you remain in a dining hall where other diners have their masks off.” ....
