VIRGINIA, Minn. – Several local businesses on the Iron Range gathered at the Sawmill Saloon and Restaurant in Virginia to voice their concerns about how the pandemic has impacted their revenue.
“Turning of the dials came as a surprise which is hard to plan for. Businesses have a plan. They have their own plan and Minnesota should have a plan on which they should hang their plans on,” District 6A Representative, Julie Sandstede says.

EVELETH â Hours after bar, restaurant and salon owners from throughout the Iron Range met Tuesday to discuss the impacts of COVID-19 on their businesses, the Eveleth City Council said it would not enforce executive orders blocking those businesses from opening.
Councilors unanimously passed a resolution declaring Eveleth a âConstitutional and Business Friendly Communityâ and said city resources wonât be used to force businesses to comply with Gov. Tim Walzâs stay-safe order that went into effect Monday, which allows retailers to open at limited capacity, but keeps bars and restaurants closed to dine-in services.
Walz is expected to announce a plan Wednesday that will allow those businesses to reopen under certain guidelines, but the Eveleth resolution approved Tuesday means the city and its police department would effectively step aside and let the cityâs businesses operate as they feel.

U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber has once again called on Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to put an end to his executive order restricting businesses during the pandemic.
Stauber, who co-owns Duluth Hockey Company with his brothers, has long been critical of the governorâs orders. âRather than continuing to make our small businesses and families dependent on government relief, Congressman Stauber believes it is past time for Governor Walz to lift his harmful shutdown, allow Minnesotaâs small businesses to reopen, and give Minnesotans back their God-given right to work,â Kelsey Mix, the congressmanâs communications manager, wrote in an email to the Mesabi Tribune on Tuesday afternoon.
