Fri May 14 2021 | Patrick Stevens | College PHOTO BY MIKE LAWRENCE / RUTGERS ATHLETICS Freshman Shane Knobloch and Rutgers are making their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2004. Rutgers is all too familiar with Selection Sunday misery. It didn’t need to wait long to figure out this year’s experience would be a little different. The Scarlet Knights were one of the first unseeded teams to appear during the selection show, setting off a celebration in Piscataway as a 17-year postseason drought came to an end. “One of the best feelings ever,” attackman Kieran Mullins said. “As a team, it was awesome because I’ve been a part of a couple of those selection shows where we didn’t quite make it. It was just great to be a part of one where we worked so hard and were actually able to get in.” ....
(Photo: JHUMensLacrosse Twitter) A big day at the face-off X, some clutch goalie play in the fourth quarter, and four Johnathan Peshko goals helped Johns Hopkins to a Big Ten Semifinal upset over Rutgers on Thursday. Peshko led the way offensively for the sixth-seeded Blue Jays’ 12-10 win over the Scarlet Knights, while Matt Narewski went 18-of-23 facing off and five of Tim Marcille’s 12 saves were made in the final frame as Hopkins took another step closer to stealing an unlikely berth in the NCAA Tournament. “The guys are fired up at the chance to play again. We’re playing one-game seasons and moving on to our third one,” Hopkins coach Peter Milliman said postgame. “I think the guys are really excited after playing well the last few weeks. It’s taken a while to get here, but they played with great energy, played hard and I really enjoyed it.” ....
Tuesday April 13th, 2021 8:00am (Photos Courtesy Rutgers Athletics) There wasn’t a team as explosive and fun to watch as Rutgers through the first month of the college lacrosse season. And after another electrifying win against Penn State last weekend, it doesn’t look like the 2021 version of the Knights are slowing down. The Scarlet Knights, unranked preseason after a 2-4 2020 campaign, have showed a relentless offense that put tremendous pressure on opposing defenses. They gutted out the first win against Penn State in a marvelous debut for Connor and Colin Kirst, the brothers who transferred from Villanova and Lehigh, respectively. Then, they poured it on against Ohio State and Michigan with identical scorelines, 22-12, the next two weeks. ....
1-4 5. Notre Dame Irish students and alums stand for the school fight song. Saturday afternoon they were dancing after an 18-11 victory over Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. St Patrick Kavanagh finished with nine points. He is playing himself into Tewaraaton conversation. The groundball and face-off stats tell the story, with Notre Dame holding a 45-20 edge in grounders while winning 23-of-32 face-offs. The rest takes care of itself. After a close home loss to Virginia last week, the Irish were ready to battle. This was the exact response you hope to see. Their EMO continues to percolate. Eric Dobson, Griffin Westlin and Will Yorke all stung corners. The FOGOs, defense and goaltending plus bench role players have Rudy dreaming of its first NCAA title. ....
