SINGAPORE: Shell is working with several partners to trial the use of hydrogen fuel cells for ships in a first-of-its-kind study for the energy firm and in Singapore.
The success of the trial will help pave the way for cleaner, hydrogen-powered shipping , said Shell in a press release, adding that hydrogen with fuel cells may be the zero-emissions technology with the greatest potential to help the shipping sector achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. ....

Shell will collaborate on a feasibility study to trial the use of hydrogen fuel cells for ships, the first of its kind for Shell and in Singapore.
“This trial is an important step in demonstrating the applicability of hydrogen and fuel cells on ships,” said Nick Potter, General Manager of Shell Shipping and Maritime, Asia Pacific & Middle East. “We see fuel cells and hydrogen as a promising pathway for decarbonizing shipping and working with partners in this way will develop our understanding of this critical technology.” ....

Shell is to trial hydrogen fuel cells on ships in Singapore through a project with Sembcorp Marine and Penguin International.
The three companies inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday on a project to retrofit a hydrogen fuel cell onto a Penguin ro-ro vessel.
Shell will charter the trial vessel and provide hydrogen fuel while Sembcorp Marine subsidiary LMG Marin will design and retrofit the Penguin vessel.

Tanker Operator Shell hits milestone in fleet decarbonisation with half crude tankers to run on LNG in 2023

Shell signed agreements to charter ten new crude tankers powered by dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines.
Four of the very large crude carriers (VLCCs) have been chartered from Advantage Tankers, three from AET and three from International Seaways. All 10 ships will be built in South Korea by DSME, the first operational from 2022 and be on charter to Shell for seven years.

The main engines and vessel design chosen for the ships will mean these tankers have the lowest possible methane slip and highest fuel efficiency including on average 20% less fuel consumption compared to eco VLCC vessels on the water. Shell continues to significantly invest in LNG for its long-term charter fleet with 14 in service by the end of 2021. ....
