Saying they want to see more tourism management and “not more promotion” of the island, Maui County Council members are transferring county funding from the Maui Visitors Bureau and putting some of the money toward tourism management grants.

The Destination Management Action Plan will serve as a guide to rebuild, redefine, and reset the direction of tourism on the three islands that make up Maui Nui.
Focus is on key actions that the community, visitor industry, and other sectors deem necessary over a three-year period.
Actions are based on four interacting pillars – Natural Resources, Hawaiian Culture, Community, and Brand Marketing.
The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) has published the 2021-2023 Maui Nui Destination Management Action Plan (DMAP). It is part of HTA’s strategic vision and continuing efforts to manage tourism in a responsible and regenerative manner. During this pandemic, the Maui Visitors Bureau has pretty much reinvented our normal role of marketing to play a critical role in the ongoing educational messaging to ensure the safety and health of our community as well as our visitors.
For the majority of 2020, we shifted our strategy to crisis management in line with County of Maui, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau/Hawaii Tourism Authority, corporate and state guidance.
From March 26 to Sept. 14, our HVCB/MVB staff managed and followed up with all quarantining visitors. Over that time, we placed 250,000 calls statewide to the quarantining visitors, monitored their quarantine compliance, answered their questions and worked with authorities on quarantine violators.
