SPS voted to change the mascot and symbol of the North Central High School Indians as well as the mascot of Garry Middle School, which is the Chiefs. However, the speakers hope to continue the use of the middle school’s logo of an arrowhead. Not only that, Sheridan Elementary School will change its name. The school is named after Union General Philip Sheridan, who was known for the phrase, “The only good Indian is a dead Indian.” ....

Some local schools are on the clock to come up with new team names that do not use Native American symbols and names schools like the North Central Indians. Sheridan Elementary is contending with a slightly different problem. The school’s namesake, Union General Philip Sheridan, oversaw a campaign “pacifying” Native Americans in the Midwest and driving them into reservations, battling the Cheyenne, Kiowa and Comanche tribes. His tactics included stealing their supplies, killing their livestock, executing people who resisted and hiring hunters to kill off herds of bison to further drive the Native Americans back. ....

The all-day, three-week program really expands the concept of summer school, and opens it up to any District 87 student, Assistant Superintendent Diane Wolf said during Wednesday’s school board meeting. “This is a very unique way of looking at a summer enrichment program,” she said, that goes way beyond the previous concept.
