Red Cross encourages people to donate blood, convalescent plasma
The American Red Cross is in urgent need of Type O blood.
According to Brian Williams, donor recruitment account representative of the Central Ohio American Red Cross Blood Services, urgent need means that the supply of Type O blood is not where they need it to be for meeting the orders of hospitals.
Williams said that January, even pre-pandemic and even more so during the pandemic, is a rough month for the agency for blood collection.
Now that the schools are not participating as much as they had prior to the pandemic the agency is hurting a bit more when it comes to low blood collection. ....

I can remember every word of the conversation as if it took place yesterday, but it happened in 1959. I am reminded of the talk as the person speaking to me, Mrs. Lena Kite, passed away last week at age 94. She was the first person to hold the position of guidance counselor at then Shenandoah High School. She called me into her office one day just as I was entering my senior year of high school. She said, “Kenneth (no one called me Ken in those days), it is time for you to think about applying to go to college.” I was dumbfounded! I hardly knew how to respond. I finally uttered, “I cannot go to college; no one in my family has ever gone to college.” She assured me that yes I could go to college. ....

SIEF Family Challenge nears fundraising goal

(Shenandoah) Efforts by the Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation to secure donations for a major fundraising campaign continue.
Recently, a brother-sister combination became the 20th donors to join the foundation s Family Challenge campaign. Richard McCall and his sister, Kathryn Barker, pledged $10,000 over a 10-year period in memory of their late parents, Keith and Mary Alice McCall. In an interview on a recent edition of KMA s AM in the AM program, Barker says she and her brother opted to answer the challenge after their father Keith passed away in June.
Rich and I have been talking for many years, actually, about ways we might be able to give back to our community, said Barker, because we just really did appreciate growing up in Shenandoah, and the educational opportunities we had growing up in Shenandoah, and we were just really proud to be a part of that. ....
