Lady Solti, who has died aged 83, was the widow of Sir Georg Solti, one of the great orchestral conductors of the 20th century; she was also an indefatigable force for good in the music world, supporting not only high-profile names such as the conductor Valery Gergiev, but also feeding promising young unknowns who often practised in her late husband’s studio at their St John’s Wood home.

The Winchester Select Board voted on March 8 to approve the borrowing of $350,000 from the town’s general fund account for the North Reservoir Dam project.
The project was authorized at the 2020 Fall Town Meeting for just over $6 million.
The reason for the borrowing is to start the project before permanent borrowing happens in July.
“This allows them to spend money before the borrowing is done,” Town Treasurer Sheila Tracy said. “The Department of Revenue requires this process to set out in writing the approval of the (Select Board). Then in fact we can use that money before we actually bond the project.”
