.- German artist Georg Baselitz and his wife, Elke, have gifted six landmark paintings by the artist to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in honor of its 150th anniversary in 2020. The portraits, made in 1969, are among the first that Baselitz created using the radical strategy of inversion, in which the pictorial motif is literally turned upside down, enabling the artist to focus on painting s possibilities, rather than the image of the sitter in direct relationship to the viewer. The compositional and conceptual conceit of upending the figures fundamentally destabilizes the viewer s perspective, thereby thwarting our ability to firmly identify elements like narrative, content type, and artistic tradition, thus s ....

Kunsthaus Zurich counts down to 'quantum leap' for Swiss art scene after Chipperfield expansion

The Kunsthaus Zurich has announced the completion of a major extension that will make it the biggest art museum in Switzerland, a step the city hopes will help to put it on an equal footing with Basel as a destination for art lovers.
The museum is doubling its footprint with David Chipperfield’s new building on Heimplatz, which was formally completed on 11 December. Due to a tightening of coronavirus restrictions, a planned open-house weekend on 12-13 December has been cancelled.
Linked by an underground passage to the original 1910 building across the square, the extension will show temporary exhibitions, art since the 1960s and the Bührle collection a long-term loan of 200 works, including paintings by Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh.
