Three major earthquakes have struck offshore Sendai and Fukushima, Japan, in the past three months. The first two, both magnitude-7.1, occurred on February 13 and March 20. The latest, a magnitude-6.9, occurred on May 1. The three quakes struck within 60 miles (100 kilometers) of each other and were strong enough to rattle major population centers of northern Honshu, Japan’s main island. These were just a few of the thousands of quakes that have struck the region in the last decade since the Great Tohoku Earthquake. ....

On March 4, 2021, a series of three large earthquakes struck within six hours of one another in the South Pacific. The earthquakes struck along 560 miles (900 kilometers) of the Kermadec trench, where the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates converge. The first shock a magnitude-7.3 struck at 2:27 am local time in the southern part of the trench, just off the northeastern coast of New Zealand’s North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui). The resulting pattern of seismic waves suggests that it was a complex rupture along multiple adjacent faults. ....

Fukushima spillage raises questions about threat of future earthquakes

Fukushima spillage raises questions about threat of future earthquakes
A road in Nihonmatsu has been blocked by a landslide on Feb. 14 following a 7.3-magnitude earthquake the day before in Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture.
Feb.16,2021
The occurrence of a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in the waters off of Fukushima on Feb. 13 is prompting growing concerns about the safety of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, as some mention the possibility of other quakes at a similar scale.
Experts said that with no way of knowing how large future earthquakes will be, swift preparations are needed to prevent damage to the plant.
According to reporting by Japan’s NHK television network on Feb. 15, the Japanese government’s Earthquake Survey Committee stressed the need to be on the alert over the next week or so for earthquakes at a “strong 6” on the Japanese seismic intensity scale. The warning suggested the possibility of additional quakes on par with the one on Feb ....

The Weather Network - Recent Japan quake confirmed aftershock of deadly 2011 event

Recent Japan quake confirmed aftershock of deadly 2011 event

Tuesday, February 16th 2021, 2:34 pm - Aftershock sequences may persist for more than 2,000 years on the slowest-slipping faults, according to research.
After an earthquake strikes, its ripple effects can occur for years, perhaps decades or centuries, afterwards. The Feb. 13 earthquake in Japan is a perfect example of this.
The powerful 7.1-magnitude tremor that struck 89 km southeast of Sendai, Japan Saturday was an actual aftershock of the destructive and deadly 9.0-magnitude quake that rattled the same area nearly 10 years ago, according to the country s national meteorological agency.
Dozens of injuries were reported in the Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures after the Feb. 13 event, according to local media outlets, but there were no significant casualties. ....
